It is said
that Canadians know winter; no one understands that better than Paul Hubner,
President of Baffin. Being in the winter footwear business it’s important that our products
withstand the test of the most gruesome conditions.
When we trek to polar regions, we subject ourselves and our footwear to the most demanding conditions imaginable. The extreme cold temperatures, howling winds, ice flows of the Arctic and the high altitude of the Antarctic make these treks arguably the harshest in the world. It makes the poles the perfect place for field testing Baffin boots
baffin island 2009
Paul Hubner
and his youngest son Ryan have trekked to the interior of one of the most
remote destinations in the world in March 2009. The largest island in the Arctic Archipelago,
covering 305,000km2, it is filled with mountains, lakes, ice falls, glaciers and valleys. The
wildlife includes numerous birds, caribou, arctic foxes and polar bears.
Paul used this trip to investigate how to improve the fit and compatibility of the Baffin boots on snowshoes, skis and crampons. Baffin is committed to allow its customers to be challenged in the outdoors without being challenged by their gear. more >>
north and south pole 2008
In January 2008,
Paul Hubner, president of Baffin, had the privilege of trekking from the 89th
parallel, across the Antarctic plateau to the most southern point on earth, the geographic South
Pole. Later that same season he brought his oldest sons Brent and Mark, along with his friend
and renowned polar adventurer Doug Stoup, to the ice flows of the Arctic; trekking the last degree
to the geographic North Pole.
For both adventures Paul is proud to have worn the same pair of Baffin boots. Hauling gear over frozen rubble, fighting shifting ice packs, open water leads, gale force winds and -35 degree temperatures he can honestly say his Baffins never let him down. more >>
north pole 2006
On April 6th the
ultimate test of Baffin’s boot technology began and was pushed to the limit
in the most radical environment. These boots were worn by Paul, polar explorer Doug Stoup and a
small team of adventurers on a trek to the Geographic North Pole. Baffin’s footwear was used on
Doug's previous expeditions but now Paul has decided to take product field testing into his own hands
(or feet for that matter.) The boot the team was wearing was designed by Paul in cooperation with Doug
and was named after him. It is a rugged boot created with 1600 denier nylon and a -100°C/-148°F
lining system able to withstand the -50°C conditions the crew has faced.
Paul’s focus was not only to arrive at the Geographic North Pole and test his product first hand, but also to raise money for the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario to assist in the continuum of children’s cancer care in Ontario. more >>
